Floating Oncology Hospital

A regional cancer care platform bringing advanced oncology services to underserved communities across Africa through a mobile, sustainable healthcare model. Status: Concept Development

African Sahara Charity Foundation's flagship project is a specialized, self-contained oncology hospital aboard a mobile maritime platform, designed to bring advanced cancer care directly to coastal and riverine communities that currently lack access to specialist treatment.

The hospital is conceived as a scalable regional platform, not a project designed to relocate between locations. The design applies the Foundation's long-horizon approach: sustainable operations, local partnership, capacity building, and a lasting in-region presence.

This page describes design intent and the vision being developed. No operational clinical services exist today.

Why this project exists

Cancer is a growing health challenge across Africa, yet the infrastructure to diagnose and treat it remains unevenly distributed. The project addresses a set of specific, documented gaps:

  • Shortage of oncology centers — dedicated cancer treatment facilities are concentrated in a small number of cities, leaving large regions underserved.
  • Long travel distances — patients in many communities face journeys of hundreds of kilometers to reach any cancer service.
  • Late diagnosis — delayed detection significantly worsens treatment outcomes for the most common cancers.
  • Lack of specialists — oncology physicians, radiologists, and trained nursing capacity are scarce relative to need.
  • Unequal access — the burden of distance and cost falls heaviest on rural and low-income populations.

A mobile oncology platform can bring advanced cancer services to communities that would otherwise remain outside the reach of a fixed facility. The concept is anchored in a simple principle: move specialized care to where the people are, rather than require patients to travel long distances to receive it.

The platform is being explored as a vessel adapted for a medical role and supported by shore-based facilities, designed to be a sustainable, health-oriented asset integrated into a broader regional care network.

Interior design

The onboard environment is intended to function as a complete clinical facility, designed for patient dignity, clinical quality, and operational continuity. Planned clinical functions include:

Consultation rooms

Private spaces for clinical assessment, counselling, and physician-patient discussion.

Diagnostic imaging

Radiology, ultrasound, and imaging capacity to support screening and staging.

Chemotherapy

A pharmacy and preparation area for the safe provision of systemic therapy.

Minor procedures

Space for minor surgical and biopsy procedures under appropriate clinical standards.

Patient comfort

Recovery, accommodation, and support spaces designed for patient dignity and safe care.

Medical technology

Monitoring, imaging, and digital systems engineered to the clinical needs of the platform.

The patient experience is designed as a continuous, coordinated pathway — from first contact through referral and long-term follow-up — rather than as isolated visits. The planned stages are:

  • Registration — a simple, respectful point of entry that captures the patient's history and contact needs.
  • Screening — initial assessment to identify those who need further investigation.
  • Diagnosis — imaging and pathology to establish an accurate diagnosis and stage.
  • Treatment — delivery of the prescribed oncology care plan.
  • Follow-up — structured monitoring to manage treatment and recovery over time.
  • Referral — connection to shore-based and regional services where ongoing care or higher-level intervention is needed.

Regional impact

The project is designed to contribute beyond the delivery of clinical care — as a platform for regional capacity building and institutional development.

  • Regional coverage — expanding the geographic reach of cancer services to areas currently without them.
  • Capacity building — strengthening the skills of local health workers through structured training and mentorship.
  • Training — establishing rotations and programs in partnership with teaching institutions.

Current status

Status: Concept Development — The Floating Oncology Hospital is an active design and partnership scoping effort. No operational services currently exist; no clinical services are being delivered at this time. The project's advancement and future medical campus are published transparently through the Transparency Center.
